The diverse programs housed in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies offer students the opportunity to create art in a variety of media and to reflect critically on the cultural production of others.

Who We Are

Our students and professors work to understand our cultural pasts, to pose critical questions of those pasts and our present, and to foster creativity. Our work combines traditional scholarship and creation in the humanities and arts with contemporary technologies and experience-based learning. We are outward facing, asking ourselves and each other how better to bring what we learn and create to our communities, both locally and globally.

The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies has three departments: Creative Studies, English and Cultural Studies and Languages and World Literatures.

The Faculty offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majors, minors and other courses as part of the Bachelor of Arts, as well as a Bachelor of Media Studies.

FCCS offers graduate studies in the Humanities and Fine Arts with the following programs: Master of Arts in English, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Arts and PhD in Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Culture is one of those words we use a lot because it means so many things. Sometimes it refers to groups of individuals and how they communicate and do things. “First Nations culture,” for example. “Work culture.” “Digital Culture.” Culture, in this first sense, is the experience and the output of those human connections.

Other times it is the thing itself, the expression of that culture. A painting. A novel. A sculpture. A video performance. The anime of Japanese youth culture. DaVinci’s “Mona Lisa”. Erdrich’s Love Medicine. Hitchcock films.

As a student in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, you will become part of a vibrant culture in that first sense, and a creator of culture in the second. There is no other place like the FCCS on this campus, or any other university campus in the world. We invite you to become part of something special.

Strategic Plan 2019 – 2024

The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS) was formally established in 2005 with a mandate to foster an environment that promotes interdisciplinary scholarship, creative arts practice, and learning.

The Faculty brings together a wide range of academic disciplines and artistic practices: language training, literary studies, cultural studies, media and computational arts, digital humanities, art history, creative writing, visual, and performing arts. Our practices are wide-ranging, and often changing, broadly described as critical and creative humanities practices, but often reaching beyond even those boundaries.

Our Strategic Plan was developed in consultation with faculty, students and staff, and sets out our vision, mission, values and priorities for the next five years.
