Looking at my name, you might wonder what a French-Canadian is doing teaching German. I sometimes wonder too, though I know that I love teaching things German, and speaking and learning any language of our imperilled planet. Alas, as one gets older, the language faculties diminish; so now is the best time to start for you students, and to open up the doors of the world! How to express my excitement at starting here at UBC–Okanagan? Is it the joy of the lake, or the promise of the mountains, or both? No, it is the anticipation of working with my colleagues, working with students, and integrating into various communities: that of the department and faculty, of the university, of German speakers, of Kelowna, and surely others I do not yet know. If I can bring you some joy and laughter, while awakening your interest in German language and culture so as to contribute to internationalization, it will be small recompense for what you will surely bring into mine. Thank you in advance, Claude.
