Declaring a Major and Minor in Creative Writing
There have been changes to the process to declare a Major in Creative Writing. Prospective Majors in Creative Writing can now declare a major at the end of first year. A portfolio is NO longer required.
Students must meet with an Academic Advisor to ensure they have the correct pre-requisites and average.
All prospective CRWR Majors must have a combined average of 70% (B-) in 6 credits of 100-level Creative Writing and 3 credits of 100-level English. Once admitted into the Creative Writing Major program, students must maintain an average of 70% in all Creative Writing and English courses.
Creative Writing majors are encouraged to enrol in two of the following first-year literature courses:
- ENGL 150 (Readings in Poetry and Drama);
- ENGL 151 (Readings in Short Fiction and the Novel);
- ENGL 153 (Readings in Narrative)
Seat in Creative Writing courses are NOT reserved for majors or minors.Students must still register on the assigned registration day. Spaces will be limited.
Non-majors who wish to take upper year courses in short story (CRWR 380), poetry (CRWR 381), special topics (CRWR 382), upper year portfolio (CRWR 470), and novel (CRWR 471), must have the pre-requisites for these courses.
You need to apply online for admission to UBC specifying the BA program at the Okanagan campus (BA O) as your first or second choice. Information about entry requirements for UBC can be found at: https://you.ubc.ca/ubc/okanagan/admissions.ezc
