Why study French and Education at UBC Okanagan?

By integrating coursework, field experiences, and a shared philosophy between the study of French and education, this dual degree pathway allows students to build a strong and connected foundation.

At UBC Okanagan, your learning goes beyond lectures and coursework. Through place-based and land-based learning experiences, you’ll connect with schools and communities, gaining hands-on insights into how teaching and learning happen in real-world contexts.

This distinctive design of the dual degree creates a cohesive learning environment from the start, opening doors to exceptional academic and professional opportunities both within—and well beyond—the dual degree.

Degree Options

The dual degree* begins with a four-year Bachelor of Arts with a major in French followed by direct entry into the 11-month Bachelor of Education French Pathway.  In about five years, you will graduate with both degrees and be ready to teach French in a classroom of your own.

Students interested in pursuing the dual degree pathway can declare this option in the second year of the Bachelor of Arts major in French, with admission offered through direct entry into the Bachelor of Education French Pathway pending the successful completion of all minimum GPA and course requirements.

Become a French teacher

There is a high demand for qualified and dynamic French teachers in BC — and across Canada. You can choose to pursue teaching French as a second language (French Immersion, Core French) or French as a first language (in a Francophone school).

Graduates of the dual degree program will develop strong knowledge in French language and culture, arts and humanities along with educational theory and classroom experience.

ADMISSION

Students interested in pursuing the dual degree pathway can declare this option in the second or third year of the Bachelor of Arts major in French.

Guaranteed admission to the Bachelor of Education requires good academic standing and an average of at least 65% in each term throughout the program. In addition, students require 75 experience hours working or volunteering with children or youth (preferably the age range that they wish to teach) prior to starting their first BEd class.

Application Process

Applications to the dual degree pathway are accepted throughout the year.

The application will be posted in the fall of 2026.
