Graduate Teaching/Academic Assistantships

Job Classification:

Graduate Teaching Assistant: Union position - BCGEU - Depending on their program and qualifications Graduate TA’s will be ranked at the level of GTA I or GTA II

Graduate Academic Assistant: Non-Union position

Student Eligibility:

  • Must be registered full-time in a Master’s or PhD program at UBC Okanagan
  • Possess necessary educational qualifications
  • Priority is given to FCCS students

Positions Available:

GTA positions are available in the following areas:

  • 6 sections in Creative Writing
  • 8 sections in Visual Arts
  • 2 sections in Theatre
  • 2 sections in Creative & Critical Studies 

GAA positions are available in the following areas:

  • 1 section in Creative Writing
  • 1 section in Visual Arts


  • GTA I, $32.18 per hour
  • GTA II, $31.00 per hour
  • GAA, $31.00 per hour

Application Deadline:

April 30th of each year (late applications may still be considered)

Duties and estimated hours of work:

GTA duties include the following:

  • Marking assignments and exams
  • Managing discussion periods
  • Teaching tutorials and/or lectures under supervision of faculty
  • Invigilation duties
  • Academic assistance to students in office hours

GAA duties include but not limited to assisting supervisor with academic program development and delivery. 

Estimated hours of work per term for GTA: 192. Estimated hours of work per term for GAA: variable

Positions and the number of hours assigned to GTAs and GAAs are subject to funding.
