CULT 401: Topics in Media Studies
Feminism, Media, and Resistance
This course examines the resilience of gendered and sex-based stereotypes as well as feminist practices of resistance in media and popular culture. We will explore some of the counterhegemonic strategies and practices of engaged feminist media producers. How do diverse feminist voices and concepts from within and outside the commercial media challenge and resist normative and exclusionary (mis)representations of sex, gender, and sexuality and other intersecting constructions of identity? Students are encouraged to do more than analyze and consume different media forms. We will engage different tools to create our own media that communicate the realities of everyday life and propose alternatives for a socially and ethically just world.
