Biography
Patrick Lundeen is an artist, teacher and musician born in Lethbridge, AB (traditional Blackfoot Confederacy territory). He studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design, Glasgow School of Art and Concordia University and has also taught at Concordia University, Memorial University and the University of the Fraser Valley. Before relocating to Kelowna Patrick lived and worked for extended periods in Calgary, Montreal and New York City.
His interdisciplinary artistic practice includes explorations of painting, drawing, sculpture, sound, video, food, performance, and public art. Recently the work has mostly involved kinetic sculptures that become animated through viewer interaction. Lundeen’s visual strategies employ humour, sensory experience, and a rough and visceral aesthetic as a means to unpack social and political contexts. Lundeen’s work takes on the appearance of garbage decay and chaos to call attention to inconsistencies and inequalities within the white cube gallery space and to question its inherent hierarchies.
In addition to visual art, Patrick is also a dubiously talented musician with 5 self-released collections of music on record and cassette.
Past exhibitions include the Kamloops Art Gallery, The Kelowna Art Gallery, Odd Gallery (Dawson City), the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, L’Ecart (Rouyn-Noranda), Mike Weiss Gallery (NYC), ThreeWalls (Chicago), Confederation Centre (Charlottetown), Wetterling Gallery (Stockholm), Katherine Mulherin (Toronto), L’Oeil de Poisson, (Quebec) and AKA Gallery (Saskatoon). Lundeen has received research and creation grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council and The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
Since 2020 Patrick Lundeen has sat on the board of directors at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art.
