Curriculum Vitae

Gary Pearson is an artist and Associate Professor in the Department of Creative Studies at UBC Okanagan, in Kelowna, BC, Canada. He is also an exhibition curator, art writer, and author of the book The Creative Voice: Life and Art in the Okanagan, published by Caitlin Press, in 1998. His exhibition reviews have been published in Canadian Art, Border Crossings, and Sculpture magazine, among other publications. He has written numerous catalogue essays, and recently contributed a book chapter called On The Outskirts of Town, for the book Re-Thinking the Contemporary Art School, the Artist, the PhD, and the Academy, NSCAD University Press, 2009. Pearson’s chapter addresses the challenges and opportunities facing university art departments in regional centres, in the context of the decentralization of art and its economies. His curatorial background includes exhibitions for the Or Gallery, Vancouver (1987); International Artists Centre, Poznan (1995); Kelowna Art Gallery, Kelowna (1997); The Goethe Institute, Vancouver (1998); The Long Gallery, University of Wollongong, NSW (2006); and Artspace, Centre for Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australia (2008). He has received numerous grants and awards, including the Vancouver Institute of Visual Arts VIVA award in 1991, and the Okanagan Arts Award in Visual Arts, in 2010. He has had artist residencies at PSI/MOMA, New York (1990-91); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (1998); Triangle Arts Association, Brooklyn (2004); Pouch Cove Foundation, St. John’s (2004); Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney, Australia (2005); and Bus to Guadalajara Artist Residency, Ajijic, Jal., Mexico, in 2010.

Gary Pearson’s personal exhibition history includes solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the US, Australia, and Europe. Recent public art gallery solo shows include: 1 2 3 Soliloquy, McMaster Museum of Art, Hamilton, Ontario (2011); The End is My Beginning, Kamloops Art Gallery, Kamloops (2008); High Early, LAB Project, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Victoria (2006); Oblique Stories, and SCA Galleries 1 & 2, Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney, Australia (2005). His survey exhibition titled One Way Ticket, organized by the Kelowna Art Gallery in 2003, toured to the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; the Robert MacLaughlin Art Gallery, Oshawa, and the Two Rivers Art Gallery, in Prince George, BC. He is represented by the Winsor Gallery, in Vancouver, where he had a solo exhibition in February 2012. Recent art and academic contributions include: Juror, Audain Foundation Award for Lifetime Achievement in Visual Arts, Vancouver, BC, (2012); Desk Examiner, Proposed Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) degree, Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, Toronto, ONT. (2011); External Examiner, MFA Thesis defense by Jeremy Herndl, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, BC, (2011); Examiner, MFA in Creative Writing Thesis defense by Lindsay Diehl, UBC Okanagan, Kelowna, BC, (2010); Co-presenter, with Sarah Burwash, “Thinking Big in the Small City: Arts, Academia, and the Question of Peripheral”, at the Community University Research Alliance (CURA) Small City Conference Whose Show Is It Anyway? Community-Engaged Performance and Exhibition Arts in the Small City, Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, BC. (2009).
