Major in Languages

Course Planning

The major in Languages can be completed in four years by students who have already completed Grade 12 French (or equivalent) or who have a certified A2 level of competency in French prior to enrolment in the program. Students without these prerequisites are likely to need more than four years to complete the major in French and Spanish as they will have to start the French portion of their studies with beginner-level courses (FREN 101, 102, 103, 104). The exact entry point in French courses can be determined through a placement test by contacting a French faculty advisor.

In addition, students in the Languages program will be able to choose from a variety of courses in a third language, such as German, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin, enabling them to widen their scope of understanding of world languages. We have provided some information to choose which first year language courses are right for you.

In order to complete a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Languages, students need to complete 87 required credits, that includes BA requirements and major requirements, and 33 elective credits for a total of 120 credits. View the Academic Calendar for more information.
